Public letter sent to Shuttleworth Foundation - about memories as dots for a better future

  • This message, this letter, was sent to Shuttleworth, via e-mail, and also to a good old fellow, an ex colleague from Mozilla.

  • Context: I wrote this letter on October 17th 2024, when thinking about my upcoming visit to Madri and when trying to find a contact of a friend (who as far as I remember lives in Madrid) who also participated in the "JetPack for Learning Design Challenge by Mozilla and the Shuttleworth Foundation". When doing a search online, I found a web page hosted at www.shuttleworthfoundation.org and was happy, for a moment; then realized a problem with the page which didn't display in the browser.

Hi there folks,

This is Marc S Galli. I am writing to send a feedback about an error on the site but moreover to make a point about values and the movement forward.

The anomaly is that a page is missing:

https://www.shuttleworthfoundation.org/jetpack-for-learning-design-challenge-announces-winners/

The reason this link is important, althought it is a project in the past, has to do with communication and transparency, first. But there is a bit more, perhaps, for us to consider about why we write, why we document things.

I would think that a project, like the Shuttleworth Foundation, is likely the kind of institution that values communication as the means that take us to achieve a better future. Our references, throught writing, can make a difference. You know, we know.

But may I take us to think a bit more - and carry us to consider a bit more about the full potential of structuring these "little things" of the past and how this effort may be actually the means to strengthen our relationships.

For now, I ask us to see the Web as a brain, like a big fellow, or a big ship, one that has a perspective. Of course, such brain can create memories in more formal ways or less formal memories. With that, from being beings, we know too of a phenomenon when we are awaken because what seems to be fragmented interactions, memories, out of the blue connect, like a spark, creating a bound that reshapes how we see things which in turn set us to move forward, later.

Your memories, your investments, are dots; apparently separated, isolated. And this is the same for the ones that had been there with you - which is my case when I had the chance to receive an award within the contest of that competition challenge with you and Mozilla. So I have a memory of that dot.

But I know and you know, from here digging from interesting past efforts and memories, and we can wonder if you and I missed doing a better job in terms of securing our interesting memories in ways to sets our movement forward.

This is the reflection, this is the opportunity.

What if I had a place at Shuttleworth site or Mozilla site? Or even at my site? Just for the sake of the forward movement. Steve Jobs had reflected a bit about that right? About connecting dots.

The reason I leave this message, like an essay, is because in an alternate universe, where we do not value our investments, this note would be just considered a bug, a minor detail.

Sincerely,

Marcio Galli Marc S Galli
